Subtracting Mixed Numbers Made Easy with Visual Graphic Organizer

Subtracting mixed numbers can be a challenging concept for many students, particularly those with special needs. As a special education teacher, I’ve found that providing students with a visual model can greatly enhance their understanding of this concept.

That’s why I created a graphic organizer that includes a visual model for subtracting mixed numbers. This resource has been incredibly helpful for my students, as it allows them to see exactly what they need to do in order to solve the problem.

The graphic organizer works by providing students with a space to fill in the number they are subtracting. Once they have done this, they can use the visual model to help them find the final answer. The visual model includes two fractions, one on top of the other, with a line separating them. The students then cross out the appropriate portions of the fractions to find the answer.

For example, let’s say we want to subtract 2 1/2 from 4 3/4. The student would write “2 1/2” in the space provided on the graphic organizer. Then, they would look at the visual model, which shows a fraction with a numerator of 3 and a denominator of 4 on top, and a fraction with a numerator of 2 and a denominator of 4 on the bottom. The student would then cross out 1/2 from the top fraction and 2/4 (or 1/2) from the bottom fraction. This would leave them with a final answer of 2 1/4.

By using this visual model, my students are able to better understand the process of subtracting mixed numbers. They are able to see exactly what they need to do in order to find the answer, rather than relying solely on abstract concepts or formulas. This has led to greater success and confidence among my students when it comes to math.
